Bachelor of Library and Information Science (BLIS) From IGNOU

The Indira Gandhi National Open University has introduced a Bachelor Degree programme in Library and Information Science (BLIS). The programme has been started by university in 1989 under School of Social Sciences (SOSS).

The main objective of this discipline is to fulfil the huge demand of large number of trained people in the field of library and information activities. Over the decade, there has been lot of changes in the field of library and information science mainly because of development of computer and communication technologies, storage technologies and multimedia technology.

The new technologies has completely changed the traditional face and concepts of all kinds of libraries and information institutions.

IGNOU BLIS Prospectus

The university has provided the link on its official website to download the Student Handbook and Prospectus of the Bachelor of Library and Information Science programme.

The admission form, student ID card and acknowledgement slip are also included in the prospectus itself.To fill up the admission application form online, you must download IGNOU BLIS prospectus. After filling up the admission form, you need to submit it along with letter of sponsorship in the concerned Regional Center latest by admission date provided in the prospectus.

The details about the BLIS discipline has been mentioned below:

Medium of Instruction

The programme is currently being offered in English medium only. However, the students can write their assignments and term-end examination in Hindi medium also.


The candidate applying for admission to this discipline must be having Bachelor’s Degree with 50% marks and 45% for General and for the SC/ST/OBC/PH category respectively OR Bachelor’s Degree with Diploma(one year) in Library Science OR Bachelor’s Degree with 2 years of working experience in Library & Information Centre.

Duration of Programme

The learners pursuing this discipline need to complete it within the minimum duration of 1 year and the maximum duration allowed for completion of it is 4 years.

Programme Fee

The total programme fee is Rs. 6,000/-.The university reserves the right to change the fees at anytime.So, the students should check out latest fees in the prospectus or online at university official website.

The programme comprises of 9 courses of which four courses (BLI 221, BLI 222, BLI 223 and BLI 226) are theory based courses and five courses (BLI 224, BLIE 227, BLIE 228 and BLIE 229 are having practical component.
